Believe it or not, the most expensive pen in the world was sold at a charity auction back in 2020 for a staggering $8 million. This unique writing tool is made of several precious gemstones, including black diamonds and rubies, but that isn’t the only thing that makes it so special.

In fact, this pen was designed with the Golden Ratio, or the Divine Proportion of Phi, in mind. This ratio, which served as an inspiration for this pen, is originally found in nature and is often used as a design principle in architecture and design. The ratio of the length of the pen’s cap and its barrel is 1.618, which is the number of the Golden Ratio.

The design is also enhanced by the precious gemstones that are incorporated on both the cap and the barrel that give the pen its signature name, Fulgus Nocturnus, which roughly translates to “Night Glow.”

The second most expensive pen in the world was produced in a limited edition of only ten pieces. 

Montblanc used the story of the Taj Mahal and its creator, the Shah Jahan, who made this unbelievable building as a burial ground for his favorite wife, as an inspiration for their High Artistry collection, which is how this extraordinary pen came to be.

The limited edition pens have three different designs:

Using a traditional jewelry technique, the pens were made from a variety of gemstones and have a curved shape inspired by the traditional Mughal dagger.

The next one is the Boheme Royal pen, made of an 18-carat white gold body covered with over 1,430 slightly colored diamonds.

Just by looking at this pen, you can realize how expensive it is and why it made its way on our list. 

It’s unique in more ways than one - its Montblanc logo is made with 18-carat white gold and embellished with 19 diamonds, and it’s the only fountain pen in the world that has a retractable nib. 

The pen was designed in two styles, one of which is made solely of white diamonds, while the other combines black and white diamonds.  

Another truly remarkable piece that’s considered one of the most expensive pens in the world is the 1010 pen by the distinguished Swiss brand Caran d’Ache. 

The pen is inspired by the watch as a common symbol of luxury. It was named after the most aesthetically pleasing position on the clock, 10 minutes past 10, hence the name 1010. 

The body of the pen is transparent, which closely resembles the design of a watch. The pen clip is made to look like a clock hand, while the nib is engraved with a gear design. It’s made of 18-carat white gold and is enriched by over 850 diamonds cut in emerald, baguette-cut, or brilliant style.

The collection comes in three editions, gold, silver, and diamond. However, the diamond edition is the only one that’s worth over a million dollars.

The Aurora Diamante fountain pen is an exclusive pen that’s only produced once a year. 

The barrel of the pen is made of pure platinum and is covered with over 2,000 diamonds. Out of all the diamonds, 1,919 are located on the barrel to signify the founding year of Aurora. The diamonds are sourced from the De Beers jewelers and embellish this pen perfectly.

Another unique feature of this pen is the customizable nib, where the pen’s owner can engrave their initials or even their family’s coat of arms. It’s no wonder that this pen comes with a hefty price tag, making it the ultimate fountain pen collector’s item. 

Just below the $1 million mark, we have the Haven Gold fountain pen, which is a limited edition collection of only 8 pens. 

According to Chinese culture, the number 8 represents good fortune, which is why only 8 pens were created. The artist was inspired by the planets and initially designed it for women, hence the rose gold color, but there’s no reason why male collectors wouldn’t want to have it as part of their collection.

The pen is made with 1,888 diamonds in multiple colors that weigh 48 carats, while the crest is made of 161 brilliantly colored diamonds. On top of this, the pen contains a rare gemstone called Tsavorite that originates from Africa and is over 2 billion years old. Based on this, we shouldn’t wonder why the price of this pen is so high.

Last but not least, we have another Montblanc pen on our list that’s made as a result of the partnership between Van Cleef & Arpels, another prominent brand in the writing equipment industry. 

Even though this one has a lower price point compared to the others mentioned on this list, it’s still a pen that immediately catches your eye.

The pen is made using the Van Cleef & Arpels Mystery Setting technique that conceals the setting holding the gemstones in place, giving the illusion they’re floating. The basis of the pen, on the other hand, is made of pure white gold, and each piece of the pen is a perfect tribute to the exquisite craftsmanship. 

The first edition had ruby gemstones, which were the perfect embellishment to this rare pen, while the following three pens that were released had either rubies, sapphires, or emeralds on top of the diamonds that were part of the initial design.
