The Pilot Kakuno may be billed as a "first fountain pen" for children, but it serves just as well as an everyday knockabout pen whether you're 70 or 7. Although I own many much more expensive and stylish "adult" pens from various manufacturers that I use for extended writing at home, the Kakuno has become the pen I always carry on international trips. Call me a contrarian, but I far prefer it to the much vaunted Kaweco Sport. For one thing, it's a reliable writer with a consistent quality nib. (it'm not breaking any news here.) And although I loathe the triangular grip section on the Lamy Safari and thus might be expected to feel the same about the superficially similar Kakuno, I find the Kakuno's less angular section to be unobtrusive and indeed quite comfortable. Moreover, although the Kakuno may be designed for children, it fits my adult hand perfectly. Go figure.
I own several Kakunos and purchased this one as a stocking stuffer for my middle-aged little brother, in the expectation that he'll appreciate the Kakuno as much as I do, and for the same reasons.
Thanks, as always, to the fine folks at Truphae for their swift and careful service.
