THOUGHTS: impressive, well-executed design. Diplomat delivers on its claim, and the isolated ink reservoir is actually fun to see in action and activate each writing session. Removal of the cap "opens" a self-sealing chamber, while closure depresses a mechanism that closes off the feed system. In short, it makes Montblanc's internal reservoir seem small.
Presentation is superb (something I have always enjoyed with Diplomat pens), and this time is functional: the larger box houses a filling station. Nice to see Diplomat's choice of foam, which was intuitive and appropriate for the purpose. You can use the included ink pipettes (which are VERY substantial...they're German!) or another implement. The pen holds an impressive amount of ink, and that capacity has increased the pen's length and center of mass, which might prove uncomfortable for those with smaller hands. It is a little heavier, too, due to the mechanism housed at the back. Fit and finish are a step above other Diplomats and worth the price, especially the hand-anodized barrel. Fun fact, Diplomat has updated the pen as of 2024, the barrel window edges being slightly move beveled.
The metal grip section is a toss-up: some will like it, some won't. Somehow, Diplomat improved even further on the nib and feed, which is as good if not better than their previous flagship model, the Excellence A2.
