Japanese rock gardens, or zen gardens, are traditionally found at temples and monasteries, serving as aids for meditation. These gardens are meticulously crafted with stones, shrubs, and gravel, raked in patterns to resemble rippling water around rocks, creating a miniature landscape. The Namiki Yukari Rock Garden fountain pen captures the essence of these serene spaces with exquisite detail, highlighting the color and texture of the rocks, while sprinkled gold powder evokes the appearance of the gravel bed.
Namiki’s Yukari Collection beautifully depicts the natural imagery of the four seasons through a combination of techniques, including Togidashi Maki-e, or burnished raised maki-e, and Raden. The creation of a Maki-e piece is a labor-intensive process, requiring multiple layers of lacquer to be applied, design outlines drawn, and gold and silver powders sprinkled to fill the designs. The pen is then polished repeatedly to achieve a lustrous finish. This painstaking process can take up to 3 months, with some pieces undergoing the lacquer-drawing-sprinkling-polishing cycle up to 130 times.
Each Yukari Rock Garden fountain pen is completed with an extraordinary No. 10 18k gold nib, engraved with the image of Mount Fuji, and is available in Fine, Medium, and Broad sizes.
