The Koi Collection, the 27th in the David Oscarson series of Limited Edition Writing Instruments, is a stunning tribute to the beauty of koi fish and the rich symbolism they hold in Japanese culture. In Japan, koi, or "brocaded carp," are symbols of love and friendship, making this collection a celebration of these deep, meaningful connections.
The intricate design of the Koi Collection features three varieties of koi, along with bamboo leaves and a waterlily, all meticulously crafted in high and low relief. The bamboo motif is elegantly echoed on the gripping section and clip. Circles representing bubbles and flower petals are interspersed throughout the design, while the Guilloché background pattern beautifully mimics the ripples of a koi pond.
The collection also includes the Japanese character for "koi" (鯉) in high relief on the top of the cap, and David Oscarson's name engraved in Japanese on the cap ring, adding a personal and cultural touch to the design.
Crafted with exceptional skill and artistry, the Koi Collection continues the tradition of Old World craftsmanship, combining the ancient Guilloché engraving technique with the art of Hard Enamel. The process begins by grinding a mixture of glass, water, and metal oxides by hand to create the fine paste that forms the basis of hard enamel. This paste is carefully applied to the metal surface and then fired in a furnace at over 1,000°F, fusing the enamel to the metal and forming a smooth, glassy layer.
After cooling, the pieces are meticulously ground with a diamond file to restore their shape, a process that is repeated until the enamel fully covers the intricate Guilloché patterns. The final stages of polishing and buffing reveal the luxurious velvet finish of the translucent hard enamel.
Creating each piece in the Koi Collection requires the highest levels of patience, experience, and skill, with artisans undergoing a five-year apprenticeship to master this demanding craft. The result is a writing instrument that is not only functional but also a true work of art, reflecting the elegance and grace of the koi fish.
