Sea Turtle Limited Edition Collection
Sea turtles, ancient and intelligent ocean wanderers, have navigated the world’s waters for millions of years. These graceful giants play an essential role in maintaining the health of ocean ecosystems, despite facing numerous threats, from predation to modern-day habitat disruptions. Among the seven existing species — leatherback, loggerhead, Kemp’s ridley, green, olive ridley, hawksbill, and flatback — six are found across every ocean except the Arctic and Antarctic. The flatback is unique to Australian waters.
Known for remarkable long-distance migrations, sea turtles journey between feeding and breeding sites, with the leatherback often traveling up to 3,700 miles each way. After mating, females return to sandy shores to lay eggs, a process influenced by sand temperature, which determines the sex of the hatchlings. Only one in a thousand hatchlings survives to adulthood, yet those who do may live up to 100 years. While omnivorous, certain turtles specialize in prey, with leatherbacks almost exclusively consuming jellyfish, a crucial balance for marine populations. Their remarkable physiology enables them to slow their heart rate to just one beat every nine minutes, allowing them to remain underwater for up to five hours.
The Sea Turtle Collection is the 33rd in the David Oscarson series, crafted as a saltwater companion to the Koi Collection from 2017. This collection brings the ocean’s beauty to life with three majestic sea turtles gliding among coral reefs, surrounded by ocean currents and schools of fish in exquisite high and low relief. The pen features a tortoiseshell grip, a coral clip, and Japanese kanji symbols for "Sea" (海) and "Turtle" (亀), with the turtle symbol crowning the cap and the sea symbol at the barrel's base. “David Oscarson” is elegantly engraved in Japanese script on the cap ring, honoring the beauty of sea life and Japanese artistry. This piece is limited to 88 pieces worldwide.
