In Japan, the grapevine symbolizes abundance, longevity, and fertility, especially as it is traditionally associated with the fall harvest. The Namiki Yukari Grapevine fountain pen beautifully depicts this theme, featuring ripe grapes on the vine alongside autumnal leaves.
The Namiki Yukari Grapevine pen is crafted using the Togidashi-Hira Maki-e technique, also known as Burnished-Flat Maki-e. The process begins with Togidashi Maki-e, where the background and scenery are painted with lacquer, and then gold or silver powder is sprinkled over it and sealed with Urushi lacquer. Once dried, the surface is gently burnished with charcoal to reveal the design beneath. Hira-Maki-e is then employed to create the main design by layering metal powder and lacquer. This intricate piece was created by the skilled artisans of "Kokkokai," a group founded in 1931 around the renowned maki-e artist Gonroku Matsuda.
Namiki’s Yukari Collection brings to life the natural imagery of the four seasons using a variety of traditional techniques, often combining them to stunning effect. The creation of a Maki-e piece is an extraordinarily labor-intensive process, involving the repeated application of lacquer layers, detailed design outlining, sprinkling of gold and silver powders, and meticulous polishing to achieve a lustrous finish. A single pen can take up to 3 months to complete, with some pieces requiring up to 130 cycles of lacquer application, design rendering, and polishing.
Each Yukari Grapevine fountain pen is fitted with an exquisite No. 10 18k gold nib, engraved with the image of Mount Fuji, and is available in Fine, Medium, and Broad sizes.
